The school was operated by Twentynine Palms Air Academy, a contractor to the DPC. It consisted of a main field and 3 auxiliary fields which were used as emergency landing strips. In 1944 the Army no longer needed Aux.Field #4 and the Navy requested custody of it. The Navy established the Twentynine Palms Auxiliary Air Station. 8th AAF 8th Army Air Force The 8th AAF was a STRATEGIC air force. Their role was Infrastructure Attack in support of the overall war effort goals. They had both Bomber and Fighter Squadrons. Fighter missions were originally escort duty. Later, after the Luftwaffe was destroyed, they were used for ground strafing.	8th SQ. The official description is "An American Eagle with outspread wings, clutching the top of the Liberty Bell super-imposed upon a ring target." This insignia was chosen because the 8th was the first American Air Service unit to use the deHavilland DH-4 aircraft in combat, powered by the famous Liberty engine. The Liberty Bell and the American Eagle have always symbolized America's stand for freedom. The combination of Air Service, the Liberty Bell, the American Eagle and the Liberty engine all contribute to make this an appropriate insignia to be officially adopted by the 8th Squadron. According to the Monthly Unit History, 8th Attack Squadron, May 1944, "The 8th Squadron insignia first appeared in World War I when the Squadron, then known as the 8th Aero Squadron, began operations in France in 1918, as the first United States air unit equipped with American built DH-4 attack and reconnaissance planes. Captain S. H. Wheeler, the Squadron C.O., was personally responsible for designing the insignia. The eagle carrying the Liberty Bell represents the first American built airplane equipped with the Liberty engine. The concentric rings of yellow and green are the Squadron colors. This insignia was not, however, officially approved by the Adjutant General until February 14, 1924. ..." (NOTE: Captain Sheldon H. Wheeler was the first commander of the 8th Aero Squadron from 31 May 1917-1 May 1918. 12th Tow Target Sq duplicate vintage patch available for sale or trade ~ click here	13th Army Air Force	13th Air Corps Ferry Squadron Later: Designated the  13th Ferrying Squadron and  13th Air Transport Squadron  and the  13th Aeromedical Transport Squadron This is the 13th Air Corps Ferry Squadron   Later: Designated as the 13th Ferrying Squadron and 13th Air Transport Squadron and the 13th Aeromedical Transport Squadron.  Althought the designation number is the same the 13th Air Transport Squadron and the 13th Troop Carrier Squadrons did much of the same missions they are not the same units. the lineage for the Ferry lineage traces back to WWII's Air Transport Command (A Non Combat - Logistics unit tasked to move supplies and equipment from the States to the forward areas) while the Troop Carrier Squadrons delivered men and equipment at the front lines and were combat units.  Post war both existed in the same way with ATS's working for MATS and the the TCS's working for TAC and the forward Commands. In 1966 Both types of units were renamed as Airlift Squadrons the ATS's becoming "Military Airlift Squadrons" and the TCS's becoming "Tactical Airlift Squadrons" with a theater role. In 1991 there were both renamed as "Airlift Squadrons" causing some units to be renumbered due to duplication. It is also posted on the Unknown or "Can You Identify" section on the USAFpatches.com website and has been misidentified as a 13th Troop Carrier Squadron. I am working on obtaining the information from Maxwell AFB (USAF Historical Research Agency) about this insignia. Flew combat with B-29's in Korea, and was part of Strategic Air commands deterance mission with B-47's and B-52's  1954-1963. Thanks for getting back to me.  I'm attaching the picture of Dad's B-26 as well as the link to the B-26 Mauraders Historical Society. My brother has the original photo, we used to have the negatives for this photo given to Dad by the photographer who took it.  Can't seem to find it now - probably gone in the direction of his A-2 flight jacket. I am scanning some photos of Dad to send to the Archivists at PIMA, right now they don't have any.  Also, Chuck O'Mohney is writing an article for Flight Journal this Fall/Winter issue about #50 'Flossie's Fury', (in search of the noseart, next!).   Chuck has written a book and several articles about WWII. Very interesting stuff. I'll send you a copy when it's published. I have a rough draft now but wouldn't want it to get into circulation until it hits the newstands. This whole B-26 historical kick I've been on was kind of a fluke - just surfing the web and found The B-26 Mauraders Historical Society web page and this photo.  This is the second time in my life that I've stumbled across this photo,  once as a kid at the newstand found this in a WWII aviation magazine, quite bizzar, huh?  I'll get back to you in 4-5 weeks. Love to get a hold of this patch would mean a great deal to me. Also looking for the 95th BG patch, Also attached below.  Thanks in advance.  Tim
