Greetings,
I finally, with many second thoughts, have decided to part with a couple of WW2 jackets I've had for over 20 years.

They have amazing nose art painted on their back, and wonderful patches.

These WWII Flight Jackets can be seen at: WWII FLIGHT JACKETS For Sale

 The "Iron Man"
I served in VU/VC-3 1956 thru 1966. VU-3 designation was changed to VC-3 July 1, 1965, and as the Sea Duty side of the squadron had a patch (VU-3A, A= Detachment Alfa, which deployed aboard ships to perform Target Drone  duties) our new CO, Commander Carlson designed a patch for the parent squadron, the shore duty side. The design symbolizes strength (Iron Man), knowledge (Book, right hand), integrity (symbol held in left hand, is Nordic, the CO's heritage), the "V" was for valor.  Also one of the Ex-skippers advised me that the "Utility" on the banner was later changed to "Composite". As an aside VU/VC-3 originated as VJ-3 August 1939 at NAS North Island, San Diego, CA.

The "Screaming Indian" squadron emblem was originally used first by VS-2 and then by VS-10. On March 1, 1943, the Navy redesignated VS-10 as VB-20 and assigned it to Air Group 10.
VB-20 used the "Screaming Indian" patch until August 1944. After August 1944 it changed to the "Tough Kitties" patch with a cat and skull design. I think it was late in the war after moving to the USS Lexington that they went to the "Slow Time Turtle" patch, but I am not 100% on that.

The 1st squadron Designated Patrol Squadron FOUR (VP-4) was established in 1928 and was based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Re-designated Patrol Squadron TWENTY-TWO (VP-22) in 1938, the squadron was nearly destroyed during the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on 7 December, 1941.  Following the attack, the squadron was reformed, refitted, and called to duty in World War II.  The squadron lost all but one aircraft while defending the Philippines, which lead to the disestablishment of the squadron.

Just a note for you. This is a drawing of our Black Cat Squadron with the "Black Widow VP-101 insignia. The original from VP-101 before WWII came from the Philippines. This was when VP-22,VP-21 went to Perth, Australia in Late December after the Pearl Attack on the 7th of Dec., to become all of VP-101. All three squadrons became VP-101..... The VP-101 Black Widow Spider of our squadron came later when we did our Black Catting in 1943 and late in 1942. VP-101 became VPB-29 in August of 1944. Thought you might enjoy or patch and hope you can locate one. I gave mine away in 1951 when I gave my flight jacket to our local mission and did not take my insignia off. Larry Katz

Hi, Brian -
In July, 1945, I was a 22 year-old Lt.(j.g.) Naval Aviator flying F4U-4D "Corsair" fighters. I joined VBF-93 aboard the new USS BOXER (CV-21) at N.A.S. Norfolk, VA. I have lost my embroidered Squadron Patch and would like just a color photo print to put with my Navy memorabilia and eventually leave with my son. I am 80 years old and in congestive heart failure. I have signed up for your CD-ROM when it is finished, but would like to get a color print of my VBF-93 Patch ASAP - with your help! Thanks in advance.

William M. Melvin, DC (retired) 8 Air Medals, DFC, Navy Unit Commendation, China Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your distinguished service to our country.  You have my utmost respect & gratitude.  Here is the best pic I have of this patch.  I am sorry for the moth holes. The moths liked the patch as well it seems. I wish you a recovery and long life.  If you ever get to So. Calif., please let me know.
Sincerely,
Brian

Hi, Brian -
While I was in our den this morning, reading  the Nashville :Tennessean", my wife of 52 years was checking our e-mail and she called me to our office (actually, an unused bedroom).  When I got there she said " I think you'll like to read an e-mail from Brian."
And I said, "THAT's OUR PATCH"!  Brian, I want to THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SENDING THE PHOTO OF OUR SQUADRON PATCH.  I intend to print it out on a slick poster board, frame it and hang it beneath a large photo of our VBF-93 squadron taken aboard the USS BOXER (CV-21) off T'Sintao, China in Nov. 1945. I'll try to scan that photo and e-mail it to you, okay.  I hope it turns out okay. Thanks again - If the photo turns out, I am the tall guy with the sky behind my head just to the right of the lower prop blade of #34 Corsair.

Brian,
I promise you that I won't "bug" you, but let me explain to you this:
VBF-93 was my second Carrier Cruise.  After graduation from Corpus Christi, my first assignment was to a dive bomber training syllabus at N.A.S. Jacksonville, FL (Cecil Field) flying SBD "Dauntless" dive bombers.  I was hopeful of going to the fleet in dive bombers as the SBD's saw the most combat at Cotal Sea and at Midway.  When I reported to the pilot pool at San Diego I was told that the Pacific Fleet had all the replacement SBD pilots that it needed. so I was sent to Seattle, WA to join a Composite Squadron (VC-82) just forming in Dec. 1943.  After transition to F4F's (actually the GM version, called FM-2's) we trained at Klamath Falls, OR and at Holtville CA , then joined the USS ANZIO (CVE-57) at San Diego. We shipped out of N.A.S. Ford Island, Hawaii and were active at Leyte Gulf, Mindoro, and Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima and ChiChi Jima in the Bonins.

My son and my namesake (who goes by Bill) is a Senior Systems Analyst for Northrop-Grumman Corp at Huntsville, AL.  He, with the help of my wife (and unbeknowing to me) took it upon himself to prepare a website to commemorate the pilots of VC-82.  There are 4 photo galleries so the site is slow to download, but you might find it interesting. See My son's website (My Dad the War Hero!) at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bmmelvin/warhero/ww2main.htm

Hello, Thanks for the link to the website about you. I loved the website. It brings tears to my eyes that guys like you and your contemporaries had the courage and the guts to go where you went, do what you did, and endure what you had to to protect our way of life. I loved the website and have added our correspondence and links to your website to my USN page.
Thanks again,
Brian

Sir, YOUR UNIDENTIFIED PATCH (#9)- Scrappers- was not a Marine sqn- but navy VBF-80, as my dad was a pilot in sqn in 1946 peace keeping tour on Boxer. Sqn worked up in Corsairs at Holtville, then war ended, so sqn switched to Hellcats (El Centro), for 9 mos cruise, 3 mos spent in Mauii, TH. The xo,, and several others still alive. There were several aces in sqn, mostly from VF-29 on Cabot. My dad from VBF-3 on Yorktown- used same Felix the Cat insignia as VF-3. The xo was with VF-5 on Franklin when hit by kamikazes. CO- now deceased was Lcdr "Grabba" Holt, came from tht VT community. I have VBF-80 roster, has the Scrappers insig on it- in black and white, glad to see you have it in color. After VBF-80, dad went to VBF-98- do you have that insig?? I don't. Dad went on to 24 years in Navy, retired a Commander, was CO of va-54 and va-151.
          Good site!         Dennis.

Hi. I'd emailed you last year for this patch (my dad's squadron/ship in WWII that was sunk during Iwo Jima) but he had a stroke in September and that sort of slowed down my trying to make him a Navy flight jacket with his old emblems.  Anyway, he's doing better and today is his 84th birthday, so I'm finally ordering this. I did a PayPal to you. If you know where I can dig up a CVE-95 patch of the USS Bismarck Sea that would sure help {now found}. Attaching a pic of my dad (guy on the right, John Mayer) on the deck of the Bismarck Sea with his crew as they just got back from sinking a Jap ship. He told me he flew 200+ missions before his ship was sunk. What I found interesting is that he joined the Navy at 17 y.o. but never talked about any of this until last year after my mom died. He told me at Iwo, he and his crew came up with some way to mod their bombs with handmade napalm he mixed on the ship, so that they could bomb the Japs in the caves. he said their normal torpedoes and bombs were for water attacks and didn;t work, so they improvised.
Best, Jon Mayer - New York

Hi Jon,
Thanks for the order.  As I read it I grimaced and expected the worse as I read about your dad's stroke.... I'm glad he is still with us and doing better.  Please wish him a Happy Birthday and thank him again for me for his service.  It boggles my mind that there are kids shooting up their high schools today, when 65 years ago kids the same age were flying extremely dangerous missions 1000's of miles away from home, and 100's of miles from land.  They are the greatest generation.

I would like to add your dad's photo and info to my website under his patch.  It really is stories like his that need to be preserved for future generations.
I'll get the patch right out to you.
Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian
I was looking for stuff on the USS Bismarck Sea and found your site. I am building a 1/350th scale model of the Bismarck Sea for my girlfriend’s grandfather as a x-mas gift. He survived the sinking of the Bismarck Sea and was in the water for 7hrs. He was in the engine room and was a fireman. I would like to get copies of the squadron logos from the ship and of the ships logo or patch if possible. Also if you have patches from any of there squadrons or ship I am interested in purchasing them. I know he’d love them since he lost all of them with the ship. (I have about ten pic's that were in his wallet when he abandoned ship. one taken from the flight deck just before they went under the golden gate heading into San Francisco!
Also I noticed your jeep page and how you feel it’s important to preserve history and teach younger generations. My brother and I are restoring two jeeps a 42 ford and a 44 ford to take to schools to let kids see and learn from a piece of real history. Also I have a M-29c weasel I’m working on. My brother is restoring his jeep as the "Georgia Peach" witch was my grandfathers in Europe named after my grandmother. He was a pilot with the 314th troop carrier group 61st 62nd and 32nd squadrons. All my grandfathers’ flight jackets were burned in a military storage facility in wash DC when he was stationed over seas in the 50's. if you could email me picks of patches from his group or squadrons if you have them or have extra's you would like to sell that would be great!
Thanks you and sorry to ask for so much
Scott Tanis

Hello,
Glad you found me.  ;-)  What a great story!  I am glad he made it and that you guys are paying tribute to him & his buddies with the model. It was just a few months ago that I sold the last VC-86 Bismark Sea SQ patch. Here's a larger photo of it.  Feel free to copy it and save it.  Yeah,  it's good to see the huge & many sacrifices made by so many guys isn't forgotten. It sounds like you guys have a corral full of Jeeps & weasels.  Very cool.  I had a M-29C as well, right after school, but the landlord of the apartment Bldg made me sell it.  bummer.   Yeah,  it's good to see the huge & many sacrifices made by so many guys isn't forgotten.  That's terrible that the Flight jackets burned up.   Ohh  just makes me sick to think about.
Let me know if I can help anymore,
Brian

Brian-
I was viewing your website for NAVY Squadron Patches.  My uncle Ed Gardner of IL was in WWII Navy and he gave me his cloth squadron patch for the Hell Razors. I believe he did communications in the back of the plane? I know growing up he was really into hamn radios and built his own. He and His father built & designed their own Hamm Radios and his father designed and supervised instillation of turbine power plants for Westinghouse  I did not see this patch on your website.  Would you like for me to send you a couple of PDF photos of it for your website? It is in Mint Cond. If so what is your e-mail address for sending the 2 pdf photos?
Walt Disney even got into the act and drew up bat cartoon figures lineage of squadrons named "Hell Razors" (sic): VB-81, VA-13A, VA-134, VF-174, and VA-174. Disney studios went on to produce some 1200 military insignia of all types during the second World War.

I'm not sure if these images are good enough for you I took them with a camera, but I could do it again on the scanner if you need me to. Let me know what you think of it. I could ask my dad if he knew what kind of plane my uncle flew in. I know he was at pearl harbor when it was bombed. My parents should have all of his old photos so I assume there must be photos of WWII in there.

Hello,
thanks for writing.  ;-)  Yes, I'd love a high res photo in jpg format please.  6-7 inches would be perfect.  email address to send it to is this one.
All the best,
Brian
