WWII Squadron Patch Website – Photos of 1941-1945 Army A2 and Navy G1 Jacket Patches made by Walt Disney, RKO, and Warner Bros. Studios for AAF, USMC, USN. For Sale / Trade items too.

Here are some low resolution pictures of squadron patches that I have come across.  Most are from my collection.  There are some from all branches of the services, and many specialized duty ones.  Many of the logo were designed by Walt Disney Studio and Warner Brothers Studios.  Some designs were in existence prior to World War Two, but with the massive expansion of air power during WWII, a huge number of new designs for brand new squadrons were approved (some logos / insignias were worn without official approval as well).  After the allied victory in 1945, most squadrons were disbanded and their insignia were relegated to history.  A good book to read on the subject is "Disney Dons Dog Tags". It's the story of how Disney's artists spent their time & expertise making up squadron insignias for the units and sent them to the troops in the field.

See Also:
"Disney's influence also included studio artists, who joined the military and then contributed their talents to the creation of nose art. Disney Studios and the U.S. government had a history of cooperation. At the beginning of the war in 1939, Walt Disney and his artists designed and painted squadron and unit insignia. Disney raised the spirit of the troops when he transformed the "once staid military heraldry format created during World War I" into inspired designs (Ethell, p. 141). By the end of World War II, Disney's five-man staff assigned to insignia completed over 1,200 unit insignias, never charging a fee to the military (Ethell, p. 142)."
-(University of Arizona Library -- Images of the Southwest -- Military Aircraft Nose Art: An American Tradition webpage, 5th paragraph)

Disney Insignias appeared on the airplanes as well as the jackets of fliers. Here is a link to some good examples of Disney Characters appearing as Nose Art.

Disney established a partnership with RKO Studios in the 1930's, when R.K.O. agreed to distribute Walt Disney's Films. RKO studios went into decline in 1948 under the micro management of Howard Hughes, of Spruce Goose Fame, who bought controlling interest in the company.  The studio's assets were sold off. Even the land was sold to Desi-Lu productions in 1957.
-(RKO studios - by Noell Wolfgram Evans, 6th & 9th paragraphs)

Why would a studio make squadron patch insignia?
The same reason that IBM & Rock-Ola juke box company made M1 Carbine Rifles. M-1 Carbine Rifle Link 2. It was a war, and everyone contributed what they could to the war effort.

There are several insignia that are listed as unknown. If you know what the identity of a squadron currently listed as 'unknown' is, or if you see any errors, please e-mail me so that I can update this list.  I cannot (sorry) offer my services to help anyone ID their own patches unfortunately.  You will just have to search here and in other resources for a match.  I am not an expert on patches, I started this collection because I thought they were neat to look at. Patch collecting takes a back seat (pun intended) to my WWII jeep collection.
Feel free to post a free 'Wanted' ad, 'For Sale' notice, or question to the WWII Squadron Patch Free BULLETIN BOARD.

There has been a strong response from visitors wanting high resolution pictures of these patches.  So we are currently working on putting high resolution pictures of the entire collection on CD rom which I could then offer for sale.  If you would like to be notified as soon as we have finished the CD rom, please email me telling me so.

If you have a web site/page aimed at a Squadron that I have a patch for and you would like to have the patch image / photo linked to your website/webpage of this squadron, Please email me.   I would also enjoy being linked to as well!!  Please feel free to do so.
I have provided some buttons and a link generator tool you may use for placement of our link on your site, should you choose to.

Enjoyed your page of WWII patches very much.
Thanks to you, was able to identify the patch my husband's uncle gave him during WWII with the 438th Fighter Squadron.

Althought the designation number is the same the 13th Air Transport Squadron and the 13th Troop Carrier Squadrons did much of the same missions they are not the same units. the lineage for the Ferry lineage traces back to WWII's Air Transport Command (A Non Combat - Logistics unit tasked to move supplies and equipment from the States to the forward areas) while the Troop Carrier Squadrons delivered men and equipment at the front lines and were combat units. Post war both existed in the same way with ATS's working for MATS and the the TCS's working for TAC and the forward Commands. In 1966 Both types of units were renamed as Airlift Squadrons the ATS's becoming "Military Airlift Squadrons" and the TCS's becoming "Tactical Airlift Squadrons" with a theater role. In 1991 there were both renamed as "Airlift Squadrons" causing some units to be renumbered due to duplication. It is also posted on the Unknown or "Can You Identify" section on the USAFpatches.com website and has been misidentified as a 13th Troop Carrier Squadron. I am working on obtaining the information from Maxwell AFB (USAF Historical Research Agency) about this insignia. 14th Army Air Force was created March 10, 1943, and absorbed the CATF. The China Air Task Force who had succeeded the AVG "Flying Tigers" 14th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron unit has a long history that dates to Viet Nam as the 14th Tac Recon Squadron has since been redesignated as the 14th Fighter Squadron replaceing the orginial 14th FS to keep the long history alive. However the insignia has been modified replacing buggs with a Samari Warrior since the unit is currently stationed at Misawa AB, Japan. 15th Army Air Force Africa, Italy, Southern Europe 15th Fighter Squadron, 53rd Fighter Group, P-40, P-39, P-47, P-51 16th Bomber Wing 16th Pursuit Fighter Squadron, CBI 17th Bomb Group 17th Bombardment Squadron, 16th Bombardment Group 17th Bomb Squadron, 16th Bomb Group, Pacific 18th Bomb Squadron 19th Bomb Squadron, 5th AF duplicate vintage patch available for sale or trade 19th Fighter Squadron, 7th AF 20th Army Air Force 21st Bomb Squadron, 30th Bomb Group 22nd Anti-Submarine SQ. Only 2 survived. Dad and George Moscovis. I am trying to recreate his A-2 flight Jacket and am trying to locate Insignia that he would have had on his A-2. I don't necessarily have to have original Insignia but that would be great. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tim McCluskey Hi Tim, Nice to write to you. Thanks for writting me. Wow, what a great story! I have the kicking mule patch here somewhere - probably take a month at least to find it. I might even have 2 of them. email me in 4-5 weeks to see if I have found it yet. Brian Brian, Thanks for getting back to me. I'm attaching the picture of Dad's B-26 as well as the link to the B-26 Mauraders Historical Society. My brother has the original photo, we used to have the negatives for this photo given to Dad by the photographer who took it. Can't seem to find it now - probably gone in the direction of his A-2 flight jacket. I am scanning some photos of Dad to send to the Archivists at PIMA, right now they don't have any. Also, Chuck O'Mohney is writing an article for Flight Journal this Fall/Winter issue about #50 'Flossie's Fury', (in search of the noseart, next!). Chuck has written a book and several articles about WWII. Very interesting stuff. I'll send you a copy when it's published. I have a rough draft now but wouldn't want it to get into circulation until it hits the newstands. This whole B-26 historical kick I've been on was kind of a fluke - just surfing the web and found The B-26 Mauraders Historical Society web page and this photo. This is the second time in my life that I've stumbled across this photo, once as a kid at the newstand found this in a WWII aviation magazine, quite bizzar, huh? I'll get back to you in 4-5 weeks. Love to get a hold of this patch would mean a great deal to me. Also looking for the 95th BG patch, Also attached below. Thanks in advance. Tim http://www.b-26marauderarchive.org/PH/B26/P978.htm http://www.web-birds.com/12th/17/17.htm Toujous Au Danger "Ever into Danger" Tim, Thanks for the pics. I am going to add them to my website along with our correspondence. That's the reward for me - I love hearing the stories & helping today’s generation touch and establish a connection with the WWII generation. I look forward to seeing the article you spoke of. Thanks! Take care, Brian Hello Brian, Respectfully request permission for any images you may have of 22nd BG 2nd squadron "Red Raiders" patches, logos, ect. My Grandfather's name was Joseph F. Champion and flew with the Red Raiders during WW2 over Okinawa, Japan and the Phillipines. Having served the Navy for 12 years (yeah I'm a lifer I guess LOL) and maintained jets for 3 different squadrons, I've developed quite an appetite for any squadron history for my personal family archives; ESPECIALLY my Grandpa's old squadron. There is very little out there that I've been able to find. And I'd be VERY interested in purchasing a Red Raider squadron patch or logo regardless of vintage authenticity. (although the real McCoy would be considered a real gem) Either the red norseman, or the bird in the white diamond pointing to the left. Any permission of images, arrangements of purchases for patches ect would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read. Truely, John E. Champion AT2 (AW) USN AIMD OCEANA VA Hello, Thank you for your service to our country! And for your father's as well. I only have the one patch as present. Here is a high res pic as you requested. I was trying to research a patch I came upon when I found your site and I am in awe.... The one I have is similar to the one you have listed as the 367th Bomb Squadron, 8th AAF but there are some differences. First, I was wondering why there is a nine on your patch, even though it is for the 8th AAF? Mine is a canvas patch with roughly the same facial figure but facing left and with a protruding red tongue, one drop of red blood hanging. It is yellow-orange with a blue border, brown face with whiskers, blue helmet &goggles, sharp white teeth, no number associated. The shape of the patch is lobate, with four distinct lobes, (sort of a truncated clover shape.) The colors almost bleed through the patch and the artwork appears to be silkscreen. I would appreciate any info you might have and thanks again for the great site, Ray Hi Ray. Thanks for writing me. I am glad you liked the website. This patch actually sat on the UNKNOWN page for 2 months. Then it was ID'd, and then re-ID'd as the 1st ID was said to be wrong. This patch is becoming a pain :) I have no idea about whether it is indeed a "9" or just an earpiece for the headphones. I will post this to the page in hopes someone will come forward with more information. Take care, Brian Subj: Re: 324th website Date: 8/14/2002 12:59:24 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: mlumsden@charter.net Hello Brian. I see no objection to adding the squadron logos to your site for the 314th and 315th. I see that you already have the 316th from the 324th group (which has its own logo). You have undoubtedly noted that the 315th had two logos -- the first being the Bugs Bunny and the second the Crusaders. It would be historically accurate to use both. Thanks for adding the links to our site.

Flew combat with B-29's in Korea, and was part of Strategic Air commands deterance mission with B-47's and B-52's 1954-1963. The unit has recativated in Oct 1993 flying B-52h's for the reserves. JUST ID'd 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron unit has a long history that dates to Viet Nam as the 14th Tac Recon Squadron has since been redesignated as the 14th Fighter Squadron replaceing the orginial 14th FS to keep the long history alive. However the insignia has been modified replacing buggs with a Samari Warrior since the unit is currently stationed at Misawa AB, Japan. JUST ID'd ww2 german navy machinist see ebay ad Dave found JUST ID'd 13th Air Corps Ferry Squadron Later: Designated the 13th Ferrying Squadron and 13th Air Transport Squadron and the 13th Aeromedical Transport Squadron This is the 13th Air Corps Ferry Squadron Later: Designated as the 13th Ferrying Squadron and 13th Air Transport Squadron and the 13th Aeromedical Transport Squadron. Thanks to Nick Devereux for help in identifying several patches, and adding more unkowns to the page. Great work! Brian Thanks to Terry L Horstead for help in identifying several patches on the 'unkowns' page. Brian Subj: ID the patch Date: 3/2/2003 8:50:45 PM Pacific Standard Time From: wmckee@utech.net The patch identified as #x on your listing is the patch for the 440th Air Base Group and the training squadrons at Santa Maria Army Air Field. I have the history of the patch, including a copy of the official drawing from the Air Force Office of Heraldry, pix of the patch on noses of P-38s at SMAAF, etc., and even the name of the designer. The following is a quote from part of our history: "In the fall of 1944 a contest was held at the Santa Maria Army Air Field (SMAAF) to select a "patch" to represent the base mission, and to enhance the morale of the personnel assigned. This emblem would be applied to aircraft assigned to the 440th Air Base Unit, the parent unit at SMAAF, and provide an "identity" for those serving at the base. Several designs were submitted. A man assigned to Squadron "E" SSgt. Fred D. Meek, submitted the winning design. It was submitted to headquarters for approval in October 1944. Sergeant Meek received a war bond for this design, and was featured in "Fighter Pilot," the base newspaper." I can send via email a JPEG file of the original artwork, if it would do you any good. We would love to locate one of the patches like this one, if you know of a source. Bill Mckee Historian, Santa Maria Museum of Flight. Thanks To Richard Whitaker for the ID of #xx sorry, no free jackets today :( Brian, Sqdrn patch #x (patch now moved to correct page & unknown number reassigned) @ your unknown list is 4th Combat Cargo Squadron formed 4/15/44 and re designated 329th Troop Carrier Sqdn on 9/29/45 after service in the CBI theaters and as "Hump Pilots" @ WW2. Is there a prize for I.D.? Nothing big... maybe just a mint condition A2 with original first issue Blood Chits and hand painted squadron insignia? Best regards, Richard Whitaker Brian, The patch in block# XX (patch now moved to correct page & unknown number reassigned) on your unidentified page is from the 504th PIR of the 82nd AB. If you could return a favor, It would be great if you could send me a hi-res image of the VT-11 patch.
